MALATYA. Although this year’s excellent crop will increase dried fruit production considerably, the market is stunned by the prices.

Prices have increased by as much as 300 USD/mt

The orchards are bearing abundant fruits and the crop will be plentiful. An estimated 140,000 mt of dried apricots will be produced this year. The downside, however, is that the fruits are so densely growing on the trees that mainly smaller sizes will be produced. Whereas smaller sizes (no 4 and smaller) continue to trade at very good rates, the traders have increased the prices for larger dried fruits (jumbo, no 2 etc.) by as much as 300 USD/mt.

Too much sulphur

In Turkey, the new season started on 01 August. More than 86,000 mt of dried apricots were shipped last season and the carry-over stocks are considered small.

The apricots are still being dried and first new crop deliveries have already been booked for the middle of August. Market players reckon that some fruits were harvested too early. Since these fruits had not yet reach the minimum Brix value it is possible that they will absorb too much sulphur while being preserved. This problem should, however, only affect a limited amount of the production.
