MALATYA. Export demand for fresh apricots from Turkey is booming. International demand for dried apricots is also on the rise and prices continue to drop.

Global production increase expected

Although the export demand for fresh apricots is excellent, it should produce no impact on the production of dried apricots. Production is still estimated at 140,000 mt or more. Turkey has so far exported 85,500 mt of dried apricots this season, 10,00 mt more than in 2016/17. The International Dried Fruits and Nut Council reckons with a global dried apricot production of up to 230,000 mt – an increase of 35.4% as compared to last year.

The pressure is on

The promising production outlook has added considerable pressure to the market in Turkey. Dried fruit suppliers have again reduced their prices by 50 USD/mt this week. Further price drops may occur until the middle of August. The holiday season has decreased trading activities. Buyers are increasingly only interested in small purchases. Long term contracts are only seldom concluded since better prices may be obtained later.
