MALATYA. With the referendum and the new crop drawing nearer uncertainties are generated in the Turkish dried apricot market. On top of this, only few buyers are interested in prompt deliveries.

This has caused prices to drop by another 50 USD/mt this week. If the lira remains relatively stable and no frosts occur over the next few weeks it is possible that prices will drop by up to 100 USD/mt. Most dried fruit traders reckon that the season has virtually ended.

The farmers and traders expect new impulses from the result of the referendum, which is to be held on 16 April. It is, however, impossible to determine in how far it will have an impact on the current season.

No reason for optimism

Turkey has almost shipped 57,000 mt of dried apricots abroad in this season. The traders, however, reckon that abundant carry-over stocks will remain at the end of the season. Although the new crop is very promising, the traders are cautious. The quality issues concerning last year’s fig crop clearly demonstrate that it is better to wait until the fruit has been dried and is well stored before there is reason to celebrate.
