FRANKFURT. One Click Retail reports that Amazon’s Q1 grocery sales have soared by 33% in Germany. US grocery sales have increased by 48% and UK sales by 45%.

Germany is the most valuable market in the EU

The US market is valued at 650 M USD, the German market at 65 M Euros and the UK market at 45 M GBP. Germany is the most valuable market in the EU. Since most buyers favour in-store shopping in Germany, Amazon plans to open stores in the country.

Germany has a sweet tooth

Amazon is, however, highly satisfied with the online grocery market sales. Coffee sales have more than tripled to about 25 M Euros in the first three months of the year. Whisky is also a top seller in the alcoholic beverages department. The category with the strongest growth rate is snacks and desserts. Sales increased by as much as 55% to ca. 10 M Euros, as compared to Q1 in 2017. The success is mainly due to sweets and chocolates rather than snacks. Contrary to this, the sales of baby and infant groceries have flatlined throughout 2017 and in the first three months of 2018.
