SACRAMENTO. Over-saturated soils in the almond plantations are not only a blessing, for some trees they can also be a curse.

During the last few weeks, Californian weather included sun, rain and strong winds, but the temperatures did not rise above the monthly average (16 °C). Violent gusts of wind shook the nuts from the trees, branches broke and trees were uprooted, while the wet soils also favoured root diseases.

Altogether positive
Until now, the losses remain at an acceptable level, the majority of almond plantations are benefiting from the moisture and the fruit are developing well. Despite the strong export figures in this season, the offers for US almonds are at a low level similar to last year. The 2017 almond production also offers a high export potential thanks to the good crop expectations and notable surpluses from the current season.
