SACRAMENTO/MADRID. Spanish almond producers are suffering from the competition from California.

The USA plans to harvest about 1 million this year rendering it highly unlikely that the farmers in Spain will be able to keep up in terms of prices, even although an estimated production of 56,500 mt is expected in Spain.

3-year low in Spain

The prices for Spanish almonds are at a 3-year low, much to the farmers’ displeasure. Investors nevertheless expect profits. In Aragón, Spain's second most important growing region after Andalusia, 12,000-16,000 mt are harvested annually, and about 70% are exported.

California is unbeatable

The USA have so far exported 552,000 mt this season, an increase of 20% compared to the same period last year. In the first quarter of 2017, Germany imported about 18,770 mt of US almonds, only as little as 3,195 mt came from Spain.
