SACRAMENTO. A successful season lies ahead of Californian almond suppliers. How do buyers profit from it?

So far, the US almond production 2016 registered about 707,000 mt of almonds, the total crop is estimated at 930,000-975,000 mt. Many cultivation areas show an increase in production of 5-20%.

Exports increase by 45%
106,594 mt of almonds were shipped out in October, which makes an increase of 45% compared to the same time last year (73,935 mt). Combined with the already shipped out quantities, approximately 60% of the marketable merchandise is supposed to be bound in contracts. Among other things, shipments to China are responsible for the good export figures since China has already covered itself in anticipation of the New Year’s festivities at the end of January. India, as well as the Middle East, have proven to be thankful consumers.

How much rain is a blessing?
Prices for US almonds have decreased again since last week in spite of the good export figures. As a rule, the consumer’s buying interest levels off after the Christmas holidays. Aside from the demand, the development of the coming weeks is also strongly dependent on the weather. Traders and farmers had no reason to complain of too little rain, so far. October 2016 had the fourth highest precipitation rate since the beginning of recording. A hike in prices cannot be ruled out, though, should it become drier again.
