Almonds: harvest will begin in September

To realize the fullest yield potential of the nut, farmers should not rely only on regions with favorable climate conditions. Irrigation systems is the answer.

SOFIA. Although farmers have recently become more interested in the growth of almond orchards, the cultivation of the nut has not been as widely spread throughout the country as that of walnuts.

Almonds: confined to some regions because of climate factors

The crop is more susceptible to drastic changes in weather conditions, which could easily impact its yield potential. Usually, during the month of February, unusually moderate temperatures, luring the tree to blossom, alternate with extremely low ones. Such drastic changes in temperatures could easily draw the line between a successful and an unsuccessful harvest.

As a result, almond orchards are naturally situated in the South of the country, with the Southeast region leading among the rest. The climate in those regions is more of a Mediterranean type than the climate in the North regions, and as a result, trees in those areas are predisposed to realize their full yield potential.

Throughout the country, farmers usually cultivate a few of the following varieties, as the biggest orchards grow all of them: Nonpareil, Asparuh, Primorski, Start, Nikitski and a few others. However, even the climate conditions are sometimes not favorable enough for the nut to realize its fullest yield potential. Owners of almond orchards are considering implementing irrigation projects to counter some of the adverse effects of the weather. However, not all farmers could afford such a luxury! Harvest will begin in September.
